Handheld Console Repair: When to Fix and When to Replace Parts

Handheld consoles fail in predictable ways, and most failures are cheap to fix yourself.

Drift, clicks and dead pixels

Joystick drift is the #1 failure — a replacement module costs a fraction of a new controller and takes 20 minutes with a triwing screwdriver. Sticky buttons need only contact cleaning. Dead pixels or cracked screens are straightforward panel swaps on the Switch Lite and Steam Deck — buy a kit that includes adhesive and tools.

Batteries and cooling

Battery swelling demands immediate replacement — do not charge a swollen pack. Replacement batteries for the Switch Lite and Deck are model-specific; match the part number. If your handheld throttles or the fan roars, replace the internal fan and repaste the APU.
